Hotel Chandler’s Favorite Parks in NYC

Fall has arrived and we, at Hotel Chandler, are loving every minute of it! After such a warm summer, the air is getting crisper and the leaves are finally turning orange. What better way to enjoy it by going to one of NYC’s many parks?! Here’s a list of our favorite parks to stroll through in New York:

1. Central Park

  • Size/Location

843 acres, Manhattan

  • Fun Things To Do

Ice skating in Wollman Rink! Since 1950, it’s been tradition for tourists and New Yorkers. This year, the rink opens on October 24th. Hours can be found here.

  • Interesting Fact

Central Park has been named the most filmed public park in the world after appearing in over 240 feature films since 1908!

2. Madison Square Park

  • Size/Location

6.23 acres, Manhattan

  • Fun Things To Do

The world-famous Shake Shack has its own stand right in Madison Square Park! The burger place started up as a hotdog cart to support MSP Conservancy’s first ever art installation titled “I ♥ Taxi”.  To this day lines form daily around the park!

  • Interesting Fact

Players of what would become the infamous NY Knickerbockers baseball team practiced in a vacant lot on Madison Avenue and 27th Street.  It was here that the roots of baseball began!

 

3. Pelham Bay Park

  • Size/Location

2771.75 acres, the Bronx

  • Fun Things To Do

Previously known as “The Riviera of New York”, Orchard Beach is a 1.1 mile long, man-made beach featuring two playgrounds, two picnic areas, over 25 different sports courts and a central pavilion! Created in the 1930’s, this beach is definitely something you don’t want to miss.

  • Interesting Fact

For about 2 years, starting in 1917, a naval training base operated in the park preparing troops for the First World War.  The distinguished American Actor, Humphrey Bogart was among the many to train here.

4. Van Cortlandt Park

  • Size/Location

1146.43 acres, the Bronx

  • Fun Things To Do

Make your way to the Van Cortlandt Golf Course!  The Park’s golf course first opened on July 6, 1895, as the first public golf course in the United States. Featuring a scenic route, it covers 120 acres and has 18 holes.

  • Interesting Fact

The Bronx is home to the Van Cortlandt House built in the 18th century. Our very first president, George Washington, used this home as one of his many center of operations during the Revolutionary War. In 1897, the house was turned into a museum.

5. Brooklyn Bridge Park

  • Size/Location

85 acres, Brooklyn

  • Fun Things To Do

Jane’s Carousel is a classic 3-row machine originally built in 1922. After many years passed, the Carousel was purchased by Jane and David Walentas and fully restored back to its original elegance. It reopened on September 16th, 2011. Since then, it has won many awards and featured in many articles and TV shows.  The views from the Carousel definitely make this a must-see when visiting Brooklyn Bridge Park!

  • Interesting Fact

After being abandoned, the park was able to revitalize piers 1 through 6, turning each into a unique amenity with amazing views of lower Manhattan.
